Definition:
Computer Science Engineering (sometimes also called electronic and computer engineering) is a discipline that combines electrical engineering and computer science. Some electrical engineers have extra training in software design and hardware integration. In turn, they focus less on power electronics and physics. It is the study of software and hardware components of a computer system and their integration. It is also the study of computer systems, from digital circuits through micro-coding to integration and application. Computer engineering offers enormous opportunities for your future. Computer engineers do more than just use computers. They apply scientific theory and engineering design. This allows them to use and develop new computer hardware and software. They write programs to solve problems and create more efficient ways of doing things. They also design new systems and machines, like robots, that rely on computers to work.
Course Content:
Computer networking, communication, information processing, and automotive control. This includes database systems and Oracle, system analysis and design, and various labs. These labs are microprocessor lab, electronics lab, and internet lab. Additionally, there is software engineering, numerical analysis, studies in electronic circuits, and digital systems. Programming and application development are also covered. The program provides fundamental training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. It includes strong mathematics components and elements of computer science. Students learn about visual programming and digital computer fundamentals. The curriculum also covers automata and language theory. It includes artificial intelligence. It also covers database systems and Oracle. Additionally, system analysis and design is included, among other topics.
Special Skills Needed to Study Computer Science Engineering:
Mathematics, Physics, and good programming knowledge would be helpful to a prospective student.
Institutions Offering Computer Science Engineering:
University of Ghana, Legon, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. UMAT, Valley View University, and All Nations University College. Ghana Telecom University. University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Carnegie Mellon University. ETH Zurich, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge. Imperial College London, Princeton University, and the University of California, Berkeley. At the University of Mines & Technology, Tarkwa, the program is named Computer Science Engineering. Computer Science is the study of software. Computer Engineering involves the study, design, and analysis of computer hardware and software.
Duration:
Four years for direct WASSCE/SSSCE students for degree programs.
Formal Employment Opportunities for Computer Science Engineers:
Computer Science Engineers can work anywhere there are computers, and telecommuting is becoming quite common for many computer professionals. They usually work 40 hour-weeks but can work longer hours on special jobs or projects with pressing deadlines. Computer engineers often work with teams of other engineers or scientists. The avenues include working as I.C.T-based medical technologists, and in roles like computer engineers or repairers of computers. Opportunities exist in management positions, or in any field that deals with computers. They can work as software developers and hardware engineers. They work as systems analysts or systems and communication engineers. They can be employed in purely industrial set-ups that use automatic control systems. Opportunities exist in networking firms including internet access providers. They also work in information/database management areas, like the banks. They also find opportunities in business like commerce. It is now a rapidly growing area. It has an attendant demand for skill. They can also be employed in research and academic institutions.
Employers:
Some of the organizations in which they get employment are Network Computer Systems (NCS), DataTell, and Westel. They also find work at MTN, Ghana Telecom, and Ghana Civil Aviation. Employment opportunities are available at VALCO, Aluworks, Accra Breweries Limited, and Coca-Cola Company.
Opportunities for Self-Employment:
include setting up personal software or hardware and personal network development firms. They can also set up their computer training centers or offer the services of database analysts/engineers.
Opportunities for Further Academic and Professional Development:
Graduates can pursue post-graduate programs in Ghana or outside the country. Further degrees include an MSc in Security, Research Components, Network Engineering, etc., an MBA, or a PhD.
Program/Subject Combinations Required for Admission:
All programs are acceptable: Science, Visual Arts, General Arts, and Business. One institution has it that, candidates must pass the three (3) WASSCE core subjects (i.e. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science). They must pass the three elective subjects; Physics, Mathematics, and Applied Electricity or Electronics. They need an aggregate of 24 or better in six subjects. This must include the core subjects at the Senior High School level. This academic achievement gives an applicant a competitive advantage when it comes to admission.
Cut Off Point for 2024/25:
KNUST- 12, University of Ghana – 10. At UMAT, it is 13
Special Advice to Students Who Intend to Offer Computer Science Engineering:
One institution has free consultancy for interested students, so people should take advantage of this and make inquiries. Students should work very hard. This course entails computer science and computer engineering. It is one of the emerging disciplines. Students should thus concentrate on their studies once they are offered admission. They should also enhance their mathematical skills.
Advice to Graduates from this Course Seeking Employment:
Students can get employment at agencies and companies. They can also be self-employed. Alternatively, they can team up with others to form a company.
