Description:

The B.Ed. Basic Education program is mounted to train teachers for basic schools.

Course Content:

The course covers all the subjects taught at the basic school level. These subjects include Social and Environmental Studies, Psychology of Childhood, and Cultural Studies. Ghanaian Languages, Mathematics, Science, and New Basic Education for Teachers are also covered. Additionally, Physical Education, ICT, and Communication Skills are part of the curriculum.

Purpose:

The goal is to produce highly skilled professional teachers for the basic levels of Ghana’s educational system. These educators will also serve as administrators of the Ghana Education Service.

Institutions Offering Program:

University of Education, Winneba, and University of Cape Coast are notable institutions. Others include the Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC), and Valley View University. In Canada, there are several prominent universities. These include the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, McGill University, University of Calgary, and University of Alberta, etc.

Period:

Four (4) years.

Formal Employment Opportunities:

This is teaching. Yet, graduates often find employment in NGOs. They also work as educational administrators, social supervisors, and researchers.

Employers:

The Ghana Education Service employs the bulk of graduates.

Self Employment Opportunities:

Private tuition to pupils and students, establishing private basic schools and second cycle institutions, etc.

Opportunities for Further Academic and Professional Development:

Graduates can do studies up to Masters and PhD levels.

Programs/Subject Combinations Required for Admission:

No special program is needed; students are nevertheless obliged to obtain good passes in all core and elective subjects.

Cut Off Aggregates:

The 2024/2025 academic year ranges from 6 to 24.

Special Advice to Students Who Intend to Offer this Course:

Teaching is a very noble profession and gives one the time to prepare for further studies. Many professionals holding very high positions including presidents, ministers, and bankers began as teachers. So do not be put off by the idea of teaching.

Advice to Graduates from this Course Seeking Employment:

Graduates have a distinct advantage in offering this program. If all job opportunities fail, one can become a teacher. If pursued seriously, it is a foundation stone to greater things.
