Kristin Davis reveals she auditioned for Monica on Friends before scoring role on Sex and the City

Kristin Davis has revealed she auditioned for the role of Monica in the hit series Friends — before actress Courteney Cox won the coveted role.

The Sex and the City star, 56, told The Late Late Show With James Cordon she was one of 8,000 women who read for the character of Monica and learned her friend Cox, 57, had scored the part after she asked her to tag along while shopping for a car.

“I think I was about one of like 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica,” Kristin shared in the interview.

Davis said she went to a yoga class with Cox and found out she’d filmed the pilot for Friends when the actress wanted to buy a Porsche.

“We used to hang out, the rest of us were unemployed waiter-actress types, and one day after class Courtney was like, ‘Hey, guys, do you want to come car shopping with me?’

“She said ‘I did this pilot and I’m feeling really good about it, I think I’m gonna buy a Porsche’. We were like, ‘wow, is she for real?’ And it was Friends. And it did go really well!”

Friends cast: Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing an Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green.

Davis went on to star as Charlotte York in the HBO series Sex and the City, which aired its pilot episode in 1998 — four years after Friends.

The actress even went on to guest star in an episode of Friends in 2000 as a love interest of Matt LeBlanc’s character Joey.

“I remember losing sleep,” she said of her role on Friends. “Partly because of the live audience, but partly because you’re in this world that has been created that is so alive and so specific and you’re trying to make sure you’re fitting yourself in there properly.”

Kristin Davis attends HBO Max's "And Just Like That" New York Premiere at Museum of Modern Art on December 08, 2021 in New York City.

Davis has reprised her character in the Sex and the City revival series And Just Like That.

The reboot follows Davis’ character Charlotte, Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie as the women navigate life in their 50s.

The show has been mired in controversy after actress Kim Cattrall, who plays Samantha, refused to take part in the revival series amid rumours of a longstanding feud with co-star Parker.
