Selena Gomez’s mum had ‘days to live’ after terrifying health battle

Selena Gomez’s mother Mandy Teefey has shut down trolls who commented on her weight gain after revealing she had “days to live” while suffering from a life-threatening bout of pneumonia.

The 45-year-old shared details of her health scare after receiving “personal attacks” online following her appearance in a magazine photoshoot with her daughter Gomez, 29, and entrepreneur Daniella Pierson.

“I was told I had days to live,” Teefey wrote in an Instagram post accompanied by photos of herself in hospital.

“I had miracle Drs and love from my family and friends to keep me going. I fought. The Drs fought and I was one of the few who made it out.”

Teefey said she gained a total of 27kg (60lbs) during her illness and became inflamed from developing an infection.

She posed alongside her singer daughter and Pierson on the cover of Entrepreneur magazine in November to promote their new company Wondermind, and her physical appearance was the subject of scrutiny.

The Texas-born mum said she didn’t intend to speak out about the near-fatal bout of double pneumonia but felt the cruel comments on her weight had forced her hand.

“I wasn’t ever going to discuss this, but I knew when the Entrepreneur cover came out comments on my weight were going to be DM’d to me,” Teefey continued.

“I was out of the hospital for maybe 3 1/2 weeks from double pneumonia.

“Yesterday was a beautiful day for many reasons filled with personal attacks. I’m healthy and I will work on myself at my pace. It’s a miracle I am here and could care less if that means I’m a 16 instead of an 8.”

Alongside her Instagram caption, Teefey also shared a screenshot from an anonymous social media user who had messaged her about the weight gain.

“I know the most effective way to lose weight, if you contact me, you will definitely lose weight,” the message read.

Teefey’s famous daughter Selena Gomez has also spoken candidly about her own fluctuating weight after being diagnosed with lupus and undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017.

The former Disney star told Cosmopolitan magazine she was “insecure” and admitted the health issues have affected her self-esteem.

‘I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me, that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff,’ she said.

“So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. And in reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends on what’s happening in my life.”
