Patti’s heartbreak over Bert Newton’s final weeks

A grieving Patti Newton has revealed how the late Bert Newton’s final weeks were riddled with health complications, with doctors planning to amputate his second leg before his death.

The 83-year-old TV legend sadly died on October 30 following weeks spent in palliative care and several procedures to prolong his life.

Speaking on radio, showbiz reporter and Newton family friend Peter Ford said Bert’s death came after a “horrible year” for the much-loved Gold Logie winner — with worrying health complications piling up in the days before he died.

“It was one complication after another – a few weeks ago they were going to amputate the second leg, but they didn’t end up doing it,” Ford explained.

“He just wanted to get home — up until 7 o’clock Saturday night, he was still talking about getting better and getting home.”

After Bert’s lifesaving leg amputation in May this year, a heartbroken Patti told Daily Mail Australia her late husband’s cause of death was due to “complications with everything” and explained he was administered with a lot of painkillers.

“When you have a leg amputated you have to be on a lot of painkillers and Bert had had, just this year alone, he’s had eight procedures, which all involved anaesthetics and that affects you pretty badly,” Patti said.

Before his death on Saturday, Bert had battled health issues for over a decade — including a quadruple bypass surgery in 2012, a bout of pneumonia in 2017 and a stint in hospital last Christmas due to a toe infection.

His wife Patti has paid tribute to her TV star husband, describing him as “the most wonderful man” who should be remembered as “the legend he was”.

“It is very, very devastating. All our hearts are breaking because he was just the most wonderful man,” the 76-year-old told waiting media on Sunday outside the couple’s Hawthorn East home in Victoria.
