Patti Newton speaks of her heartbreak at losing ‘the most wonderful man’

Bert Newton‘s wife Patti has expressed her heartbreak at the passing of her husband, describing him as “the most wonderful man”.

Patti, 76, spoke through tears as she talked about her husband and Australian TV icon.

“It’s very, very devastating. All our hearts are breaking because he was just the most wonderful man,” she told media outside the couple’s Hawthorn East home.

Bert had been battling complications related to a leg amputation from May. He died last night at age 83.

Patti and Bert had been married for almost 47 years.

“He had such a fabulous attitude,” Patti said.

“And he gave us so much joy right up to the end.”

Patti also revealed the heartbreak of missing her husband’s final moments.

“I left at ten past seven, and I was just pulling around to come into my drive and I get the call to say he’d taken his last breath at 7.22pm,” she said.

“So, I missed him, but maybe he didn’t want me to be there for his last breath.”

Patti had been sharing regular updates on Bert’s condition with her social media followers.

In photos only recently shared to her Instagram account, Bert appeared beaming from his hospital bed, surrounded by family.

The final picture Patti shared of her husband before his death shows the TV legend in good spirits, cuddling five of his grandkids.

Tributes have flooded social media following news of the Australian TV and radio icon’s passing.

Prominent friends, politicians and other notable public figures have responded to the news with an outpouring of grief and shared memories from his six-decade career.

Among those sharing tributes were Nine entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins, Today Extra host David Campbell, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison

Morrison praised Newton for helping Australians feel connected in a lengthy Twitter statement.

“Australia loved Bert. There will never be another like him,” he said in a statement.

“Bert came into our homes and made himself very welcome. He was a regular guest and we always looked forward to his next visit.

“There was a familiarity that connected us to Bert, but it also connected us to each other. We could laugh together. That was his gift.”

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrew today confirmed Bert will receive a state funeral, giving Aussies the chance to farewell an icon.

“We will all have an opportunity to honour his memory, his talent and his achievements at a state funeral — details will be shared in the coming days,” a statement from the Premier’s office reads.
