There is a build up of great tension in the Northern Region National Democratic Congress (NDC) over a perceived ‘turf war’ between Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and a private contractor aligned to the NDC Fuzak Yushaw over “who is in charge” in the region.
This has led to minor clashes, confrontations and arguments among NDC faithfuls in the Northern Region on the streets, in whatsapp groups, in meetings and bases where NDC youth groups congregate to discuss current affairs in Ghana, MyNewsGh.com has been told.
Mr. Haruna Iddrisu has for years been the face of Northern Region NDC and is widely regarded as the most Influential politician of Northern extraction in modern times without any “challengers” until recently. Haruna Iddrisu is considered “godfather” to several political figures at home in the Northern Region and outside the North whereas Alhaji Fuzak Yushaw has come up very faster and secured a loyal base for himself especially in Northern Region among youth who have always felt marginalized from the political process by the people at the top.
Alhaji Fuzak is widely praised for being the go-to person for Northern youth and is always available to listen to them and mentor while doling out huge cash to solve party and personal problems of members who throng to his home daily. While Haruna Iddridu does the same and more, some party supporters believe Alhaji Fuzak does far better.
Although Haruna Iddrisu has had “turf clashes” in the past with the likes of Inusah Fuseini former Roads Minister under NDC, Haruna Iddrisu has largely remained unsullied and is widely respected across the country.
However, the emergence of Alhaji Fuzak who is also commanding very wide following among the Northern NDC Youth front has provided a new ‘competition” to Haruna Iddrisu leading to argument among Northern youth bases especially in Tamale and its environs on who among the two is “better”.
The “cold war” has reportedly led to tensions and show of power between the two factions as the private contractor Alhaji Fuzak continues to show force while the Minority Leader’s supporters say his authority and inflence in the North is unimpeacheable and unchallengeable.
In the light of the above, a youth group aligned with the Fuzak faction calling itself Coalition of Youth Groups in the Northern Region held a press conference on 6th August, 2021 where they laid out a litany of allegations against the Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu while whitewashing their sponsor Fuzak.
Among the accusations include alleged attempts to undermine the chances of John Dramani Mahama by Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, allegations which have made the rounds since at least, 2012, when John Mahama allegedly named Haruna to a “less juicy” Ministry as his brother from the North.
Despite all the above, Haruna Iddrisu has been rising faster too although with allegations of his own. He is now a Minority Leader serving a second term.
While the pro-Fuzak group pledged support to the flagbearership of John Mahama in 2024, they laid out their grievances against developments in the region that could cost the NDC its 2024 victory, especially, Haruna Iddrisu’s alleged anti-Mahama moves.
“This (the Fuzak Haruna impasse) undoubtedly makes the party unpopular in the region and by extension, having the potency to dwindle the fortunes of the next flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC as it was the case in previous elections. It is for this reason that we embark on this rescue mission to set the records bluntly, without fear or favor”, they wrote.
After the event, they matched to the residence of Nyab Kasuli lana – chairman of the council of elders in the region to submit a petition to him on the issues they raised.
