A RETIRED Detroit Police Chief is planning a run against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer over what he calls poor “leadership” during the pandemic.
Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig said he is launching “the Chief James Craig For Governor Exploratory Committee” on Wednesday to run as a Republican candidate in the state against the Democrat incumbent.
Speaking on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Craig said he blamed Whitmer for her poor leadership during the pandemic and said there would be increased violence in Detroit were it not for him.
“We know what happened last year when other cities were burning: Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit did not burn,” he said of the protests that followed the death of George Floyd.
Craig, a native of Detroit and a 44-year veteran of the Detroit police force – with eight of those years as chief – said he “protected and served” for decades for Detroit and wants to do the same for the rest of Michigan.
The Republican said Whitmer’s inaction in leadership led to many problems afflicting small business owners in the state.
“I can’t help but think about the small businesses who are suffering through the pandemic, and now we want to give” what Craig called “handouts and businesses cant even hire employees.”
“I’ve got to tell you, I’m running, because when I look at politicians across the country, when I look at Governor Whitmer, she follows different rules – she just does.”
“This is about leadership – you can’t take that away from me – I’m a fighter.”
