Britney Spears‘ younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, has been slammed by #FreeBritney supporters for staying silent amid her older sister’s explosive testimony earlier this week — so much so that she has disabled comments on her Instagram page.
Britney and Jamie Lynn’s mother, Lynne Spears, appears to have done the same.
While comments on both Jamie Lynn and Lynne’s Instagram accounts cannot be seen in their most recent posts due to the disabling, scrolling further back through both their Instagram feeds — and Jamie Lynn’s Twitter mentions — yields much evidence of the harassment both women are receiving.
One of Lynne’s Instagram posts from June 3, where she is promoting mustard seeds, has 315 comments, and a majority of them are about Britney’s conservatorship.
“Why are you not fighting for Britney or sticking up for her? Is there something about Britney that you don’t like? What is it about Britney that you hate so much that you’re totally okay with how she’s been treated for the last 13 years? Do you favor Jamie Lynn over her? GIVE US AN ANSWER? #freebritney,” one user wrote in a comment that has 1117 likes, almost twice as much as the likes on Lynne’s actual post.
Another one of Lynne’s Instagram posts from 2019, where she posts a screenshot of a Deadline article announcing Jamie Lynn’s casting in Netflix series Sweet Magnolias, has been flooded with hate comments against both Jamie Lynn and Lynne in the days since Britney’s 24-minute statement to probate judge Brenda Penny.
“Jamie lyn[n] 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍,” one user wrote, while another called for Netflix to remove Jamie Lynn from the cast.
“@netflix SHAME ON YOU FOR SUPPORTING THIS EVIL VILE PERSON. REMOVE HER FROM THE SHOW! 🤬🤬,” user nostalgiaduh wrote.
Meanwhile, another user commented: “Those that are complicit are guilty. You are a horrible mother Lynne, showing immense favoritism and watching Britney lose her freedom.”
Some #FreeBritney supporters suggest that the two women stole money from the 39-year-old ‘I’m A Slave 4 U’ hitmaker, and that they played a part in Britney’s struggles and are not supporting her properly. There are also many threats and insults littered among the comments.
The hashtag #JamieLynnSpearsIsOverParty has also been trending on Twitter, with many users referencing Jamie Lynn turning off her Instagram comments.
One user claimed that Jamie Lynn disabled her Instagram comments because she was “dragged by over 1.5K people on her latest post” and another noted that only nine of her most recent posts have the comments disabled, with her older posts having more positive comments underneath.
Jamie Lynn, who is nine years younger than Britney, did post to Instagram on June 23, the same day that Britney spoke in court — but made no mention of Britney, and a lot of Jamie Lynn’s followers deemed it insensitive.
“my finger got smashed between these 2 doors and I still have a bruise under my nail, but cute spot for pictures, nonetheless,” she captioned the post, which featured a series of images of Jamie Lynn posing in a doorway.
Apparently, the post had 1500 comments slamming Jamie Lynn before she disabled comments.
Jamie Lynn has stayed silent about Britney’s conservatorship controversy, even though it was reported by The Blast in August 2020 that Jamie Lynn was named as a trustee of Britney’s estate in 2018. Britney’s co-conservators at the time were attorney Andrew Wallet, and Britney and Jamie Lynn’s father, Jamie Spears.
On June 23, Britney made an explosive 24-minute statement to the court, where she said she wanted to sue her family and that the conservatorship she has been under for 13 years is “abusive.”
“I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised,” Britney said. “I just want my life back.”
Amongst other concerning claims, Britney compared her conservatorship to enslavement and said she was forced to work against her will, she was forced to take lithium against her will, making her feel “drunk” and “scared,” she was forced to be on birth control even though she wants a child, and that she has not been able to get changed without someone watching.
Britney also said her past therapist was “abusive” and that her father, Jamie, is “100,000 per cent” loving controlling and “hurt[ing] his own daughter.”
The ‘Gimme More’ songstress also spoke about how she was punished if she didn’t comply with the wishes of her father or her management.
“[Judge Penny], my dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship and my management who played a huge role in punishing me — ma’am, they should be in jail,” Britney said.
Per AP, Jamie Spears’ lawyer Vivian Thoreen gave a brief statement on his behalf after the hearing earlier this week.
“He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain,” Thoreen said. “Mr. Spears loves his daughter, and misses her very much.”
Jamie Lynn Spears’ husband, Jamie Watson, gave a statement to The New York Post on June 25, two days after the hearing.
“I can assure you her family loves her and wants the best for her,” Watson, who has been married to the Zoey 101 star since 2014, said.
“I wouldn’t be around people who weren’t. Who wouldn’t want to be in support of Britney?”
Although Jamie Lynn has been silent, Lynne did apparently comment through her lawyer on the situation.
According to Lynne’s lawyer Gladstone Jones, Lynne is reportedly a “very concerned mother” after hearing Britney talk freely and in-depth about the “abuse” she says she has endured while under the court-appointed conservatorship.
On behalf of Lynne, Jones then asked the judge to listen to Britney’s request to change her care plan, which has been in place since 2008.
Lynne also previously expressed concerns about Jamie’s US$890,000 (approx. $1.1 million) legal fees, filing an objection with the court in April 2021 saying the legal services were not “performed in good faith for the benefit” of Britney and were “utterly excessive,” and demanded they be paid back to Britney’s estate.
Jamie, 68, who controls the conservatorship, and Lynne, 66, married in 1976 before divorcing in 2002. They have three children: Bryan, 44, Britney, 39, and Jamie Lynn, 30.
They reconciled without remarrying in 2010 and were spotted together in 2014, but appear to have completely separated by 2020.
Jamie Lynn and Britney’s brother Brian have yet to comment on the hearing.
