Jonny Lee Miller joins The Crown cast as former British Prime Minister John Major

Actor Jonny Lee Miller, known for playing drug addict Sick Boy in the 1996 film Trainspotting, is joining the cast of hit Netflix series The Crown, in which he will portray former British Prime Minister John Major.

The award-winning drama about Britain’s royal family has cast a spate of new actors for its fifth season, with Imelda Staunton set to play Queen Elizabeth and Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki portraying the late Princess Diana.

Miller’s casting as Major, who was prime minister from 1990 to 1997, was announced in a post on The Crown‘s official Twitter page on Friday.

Miller, 48, shot to fame in Trainspotting, which followed Edinburgh drug addicts Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie. Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, it gained a cult following and a sequel was released in 2017.

Prior to Trainspotting, Miller starred opposite Angelina Jolie in the 1995 crime thriller film Hackers.

It was on the set of Hackers that the duo fell in love in real life, as their on-screen characters Crash Override and Acid Burn did the same.

After filming wrapped, however, the couple called it quits as Miller had to return to the United Kingdom.

They eventually reunited and tied the knot in a small civil ceremony in 1996. Miller was 22, while Jolie was 20.

However, rumours the romance re-igniting have sparked, after Jolie was seen leaving the now 48-year-old Miller’s home during a family trip to New York City two weeks ago.

She was seen again leaving his New York property last week, this time with her 17-year-old son Pax in tow.

Season 5 of The Crown is set to begin filming in July 2021 at Elstree Studios, if the coronavirus pandemic permits.

The series will air in 2022, picking up from where Season 4 left off at Christmas 1990.

Margaret Thatcher is no longer prime minister after resigning in November 1990, and Prince Charles and Princess Diana, at this stage, are still married.

There likely will be much drama to come — 1992 was infamously described as “annus horribilis” by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as that was the year Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips divorced, while Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew split too much public spectacle — as did Charles and Diana, and Andrew Morton’s tell-all Diana: Her True Story was published too.

That same year, there was a catastrophic fire at Windsor Castle as well.

Miller is also known television series Elementary, where he played the main character Sherlock Holmes opposite Lucy Liu’s Joan Watson, Dexter and Smith.
