Kenilworth bridge collapse latest – Shocking pictures show overpass CAVE IN and fall onto DC-295 injuring six people

SIX people have been injured after a bridge in Washington DC collapsed, reports say.

Shocking pictures show that the Kenilworth bridge caved in over a highway, halting dozens of cars.

Five people were rushed to hospital and six people in total were hurt, cops said during an afternoon press conference.

Images show that the bridge fell on top of three lanes of traffic, with debris stretching along the way.

Two vehicles appear to be trapped under the bridge, but firefighters confirmed that no one is stuck.

    DC officials said the bridge likely collapsed after being struck by a semi-truck.

    “Those are preliminary findings, but everything we see at the accident scene leads to this being a collision pulling the bridge off its mooring,” Deputy DC Mayor Chris Geltart said.

    One of two vehicles trapped under the fallen bridge included a truck carrying 500 gallons of diesel.

    It began leaking fuel and about 25 gallons of it spilled into neabry drains, according to WRC.

    A DC Department of Energy & Environment spokesperson reportedly said the Hazmat team put down material to absorb more diesel and lessen the risk to the city’s waterways.

  • TRAFFIC STRETCHED ON FOR MILES

    Traffic stretched on for miles after a pedestrian bridge collapsed onto DC-295 in Northeast Washington, D.C.

    All lanes of the DC-295 have now been blocked off, Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination confirmed.

    The traffic was backed up for at least three miles northbound and one-and-a-half miles southbound.

    Authorities are looking into the cause of the bridge collapse.

    They are seeing if “any other bridges were impacted by what happened here” and said it would have “had to pass under at least one other bridge.”

    DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management said the highway will remain closed until Thursday night.

    “Interstate 295 is closed in both directions with no access from US-50/New York Ave split to the 695 interchange,” the agency tweeted.

    “Expected to reopen on Thursday (6/24) at 10 pm. Local resident access only, others should avoid area,” the tweet went on.

    Six people were assessed after the bridge collapsed just before noon in DC.

    Five people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
