The two actors, who played on-screen love interests Ross and Rachel in the hit sitcom, admitted they were “crushing hard” on each other while working together but insisted nothing happened off-screen between the pair.
When pressed further about this during a radio interview on Wednesday, Aniston told shock jock Howard Stern, the pair never “banged” and “if that happened” she would “proudly” admit it.
“We were in relationships and it was always never the right time and it wouldn’t have worked,” Aniston said on Stern’s Sirius XM show.
“The beauty of that was that whatever feelings we had we just literally channelled everything into Ross and Rachel and I think that’s maybe why it resonated the way it did.”
“But no, we never, on my life [got together]. And Courteney and Lisa would know if it did because they would’ve heard about it. They can vouch for me,” Aniston said, to which Cox replied that was “true”.
Feeling like Stern still didn’t believe her, Aniston continued, “I would proudly say I banged Schwimmer if that happened. But no.”
During Friends: The Reunion episode, which aired last month, the pair admitted host James Corden they had a crush on each other when they first started on the show.
“Yeah, in the first season we… I had a major crush on Jen,” 54-year-old Schwimmer said, which Aniston added was “reciprocated”.
“I think we both, at some point, we both were crushing hard on each other,” he continued. “But it was like two ships passing, because one of us was always in a relationship and we never crossed that boundary. You know, we respected that.”
They also revealed their first kiss was on-screen as their characters Ross and Rachel, which Cox described as one of the best moments in the entire series.
“I remember saying one time to David, ‘It’s going to be such a bummer if the first time you and I actually kiss is going to be on national television’,” Aniston said.
“Sure enough, the first time we kissed was in that coffee shop. So we just channelled all of our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel.”
Having recently re-watched the epic scene, Cox told her co-stars during the reunion that it left her “weeping”.
“The tension — it was just palpable, it was just perfect… Man, that was something,” the 57-year-old said.
