GOP Rep. Andrew Clyde slammed for ‘refusing to shake hands’ with cop beaten unconscious with flagpole in Capitol riot

REP Andrew Clyde is being slammed as a “coward” for allegedly refusing to shake the hand of a cop yesterday who was beaten with a flag pole and suffered a heart attack during the January 6 riot.

Clyde was among 21 House Republicans who voted on Tuesday against legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the police officers who protected the US Capitol when it was stormed by a violent group of Trump supporters.

DC Metropolitan officer Michael Fanone, 44, voluntarily rushed to the scene when the violence began to defend Capitol buildings.

He claimed Clyde’s response to him was like giving the “middle finger” to law enforcement and said he was going to “call out” the congressman for “slinging bulls**t about January 6.”

Fanone suffered a concussion and a mild heart attack after he was stun-gunned at the bottom of his skull several times and beaten with a flagpole.

He said that since the attack he has been dealing with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Since January 6, the cop has become one of the leading voices pushing back as Republican lawmakers such as Clyde have attempted to downplay the severity of the violence.

On Wednesday, he was joined by Capitol police officer Harry Dunn as they attempted to meet with the 21 members of the GOP who had voted against them being awarded earlier in the week.

Fanone claimed in an interview that he recognized Clyde at an elevator and approached him.

“I was very cordial. I extended my hand to shake his hand. He just stared at me,” Fanone told CNN

“I don’t know who you are,” Clyde allegedly answered.

The officer said he then introduced himself and explained he “suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as a heart attack after having been tased numerous times at the base of my skull, as well as being severely beaten.”

Fanone told CNN he added that he had also been stripped of his badge and radio.

“At that point, the congressman turned away from me,” the officer claimed.

“His response was nothing,” Fanone said.

“He turned away from me, pulled out his cellphone, and started thumbing through the apps.”

The cop added that he believes Clyde opened up his camera app and was trying to record audio of the encounter.

“As soon as the elevator doors opened, he ran as quickly as he could like a coward,” Fanone alleged.

Clyde was blasted as “disgusting” on social media after the interview.

“#BREAKING Officer Fanone just ran into @Rep_Clyde at Capitol (he’s the “Jan 6 was a typical tour” guy). Fanone introduced himself as ‘someone who fought to defend the Capitol’ and put out his hand. Clyde refused to shake it. To honor Trump, @HouseGOP will dishonor the police,” Rep Eric Swalwell tweeted.

“This is really incredible,” added Rep Adam Kinzinger, who has been among the Republicans who voted for a probe into January 6.

“Also relayed an interaction he had with another member’s Chief of Staff that was really incredibly bad and disrespectful.”

Members of Congress have been unable to agree on the events of January 6 as a push for an independent investigation into the events was blocked by Senate Republicans last month despite six rebels breaking from the party.

Clyde has been among the most vocal in insisting that it was not an insurrection, or that the actions of the mob were even that violent.

He claimed during a House hearing in May that it was like a “normal tourist visit” with only “some who committed acts of vandalism.”

“Watching the TV footage of those who entered the Capitol and walked through Statuary Hall showed people in an orderly fashion staying between the stanchions and ropes taking videos and pictures,” the Georgia Republican said.

“You know, if you didn’t know the TV footage was a video from January the 6th, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.”

Fanone said he took his interaction with Clyde on Wednesday “very personally.”

He claimed it was an insult to all law enforcement who defended US capitol buildings against the mob.

The officer added that he also had a run-in with James Braid, chief of staff for Rep Matthew Rosendale.

The congressman was also among the 21 Republicans who voted against the Gold medal for officers on Tuesday.

Fanone said Braid “really got aggressive with Harry.”

Rosendale’s office denied the claim to The Washington Post

Rep Clyde’s office did not respond to a request for comment from The Sun.
