Despite saying they’re “a bit out of practice”, former Full House stars Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen have given a rare interview to mark the 15th anniversary of their luxury fashion label, The Row.
The famous twins left behind their successful acting careers in 2004 to focus on establishing their label — and now, at 35, they’ve shared insight into why they stepped away from Hollywood.
“I don’t know how conscious we were of what we were doing at that time, to be really honest,” Ashley told i-D magazine of switching their focus to fashion. “We had just moved to New York. We were 18 years old and I think what we did know was that we wanted to take that time to take a break from what we were previously doing and to explore things that interested us, and explore what life has to offer…”
“Creatively,” Mary-Kate said, before Ashely explained, “We wanted to explore making something of ourselves.”
At the time, they were arguably the most recognisable twins on the planet — the duo shared the role as Michelle Tanner on popular sitcom Full House from 1987 to 1995, before starring in a string of family movies and starting their production company Dualstar. But the twins did not want to use their image to launch their label.
“We really didn’t want to be in front of it,” Ashley said. “We didn’t necessarily even want to let people know it was us, in a way. I mean, it was one of those things where it was really about the product, to the point where we’re like, ‘Who could we get to kind of front this so we don’t have to?’ I think, to this day, you’ll see we really put the product first.”
Mary-Kate — who explained they “were raised to be discreet people” — said they enjoyed working in the fashion industry more than Hollywood because it allowed them to grow and evolve freely.
“I think the reason that we do fashion is to constantly try to fix our imperfections, and you always have next season to do that,” Mary-Kate said. “It’s also our job to find every imperfection in there to make sure that we’re constantly pushing ourselves and training our eyes and making sure everyone is served. Just evolving and learning.”
“We’re not chasing anything,” she later added. “We’re just being really honest with who we are and where we are with the brand.”
