In an interview with Los Angeles Times, the music mogul shared new details about the recent health scare.
“It’s a really weird thing. I’ve never had high blood pressure,” he told the publication. “And I’ve always been a person that has always taken care of my health. But there’s something that happens for some reason with Black men and high blood pressure, and I never saw that coming.”
“But I’m taking care of myself,” Dre added. “And I think every Black man should just check that out and make sure things are OK with the blood pressure. And I’m going to move on and, hopefully, live a long and healthy life. I’m feeling fantastic.”
Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, was reportedly rushed by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s intensive care unit back in January. At the time, TMZ reported that the hip hop star was in a “stable and lucid condition.”
The prolific producer is widely regarded as one of the top earners in hip-hop and the music industry and is estimated to be worth US$800 million (approx. $1.03 billion). He has since teamed up with record executive Jimmy Iovine to create a new public high school in LA, where Dre grew up and attended school. The school is aimed at reaching “the inner-city kid, the younger me,” who the rapper says wasn’t at all interested in a traditional curriculum growing up. The campus will be set up for students who strive to be entrepreneurs and is scheduled to open in 2022.
Dre, 56, is currently in divorce proceedings from his estranged wife Nicole Young after 24 years of marriage. The estranged couple agreed to legally end their marriage on April 15 but are yet to settle the financial part of their case — which has caused them much disagreement. A judge is reportedly set to sign off on legally ending their marriage in July.
